Supporting this Home was not only our first project, but also the reason why AVANZAR was founded.

Back in 1999 during one of Margarita‘s trips to Cuenca - Ecuador she heard of the "Hogar de la Madre y el Nino" (Single Mother‘s Home), a home that welcomes up to 20 young pregnant women and/or abandoned mothers and their children who have no place to go.

After visiting the home, it became clear that the nuns who run it, needed support urgently in order to offer the mothers and their children a safe, hygienic and comfortable place to live, as well as the social assitence needed in their cases.

Now days as soon as a woman and her child (children) arrive to the home, we take care that they receive medical as well as psychological assistance. Furthermore her case is studied and the necessary legal steps are taken in order to assure her and her children‘s well being and safeness.

In addition we look for a school for the children and a job for the mothers and since many of the mothers are teenagers (between 13 and 15) or have not finished school we also support them to continue with their education or to learn a commercial activity.

During the time that the mothers spend at the home they receive periodical information on how to take care of their children, hygiene, proper nutrition, illness prevention, legal rights, first aid, contraception, etc etc.

Once the women and children left the home, we keep the contact and support them to re-integrate and find their place in society. Furthermore, they are always welcome to take part in our information activities, medical check ups, workshops, celebrations and more.

Apoyar este Hogar no sólo fue nuestro primer proyecto, sino también la razón por la que se fundó AVANZAR.

En 1999, durante uno de sus viajes a Cuenca (Ecuador), Margarita oyó hablar del "Hogar de la Madre y el Niño", un hogar que acoge hasta 20 jóvenes embarazadas y/o madres abandonadas y a sus hijos que no tienen adonde ir.

Tras visitar el hogar, quedó claro que las monjas que lo gestionan necesitaban ayuda urgente para poder ofrecer a las madres y a sus hijos un lugar seguro, higiénico y cómodo donde vivir, así como la asistencia social necesaria en sus casos.

Hoy en día, en cuanto una mujer y su(s) hijo(s) llegan al hogar, nos encargamos de que reciban asistencia médica y psicológica. Además, se estudia su caso y se toman las medidas legales necesarias para garantizar su bienestar y el de sus hijos.

Además buscamos una escuela para los niños y un trabajo para las madres y como muchas de las madres son adolescentes (entre 13 y 15 años) o no han terminado la escuela también las apoyamos para que continúen con su educación o aprendan una actividad comercial.

Durante el tiempo que las madres pasan en el hogar reciben información periódica sobre cómo cuidar de sus hijos, higiene, nutrición adecuada, prevención de enfermedades, derechos legales, primeros auxilios, anticoncepción, etc. etc.

Una vez que las mujeres y los niños dejan el hogar, mantenemos el contacto y las apoyamos para que se reintegren y encuentren su lugar en la sociedad. Además, siempre son bienvenidos a participar en nuestras actividades informativas, revisiones médicas, talleres, celebraciones y mucho más.

Since the begining of the project and until these days we have:

• Offered training and seminars in skills such as: cooking, sewing, plumbing, handicrafts, small electrical installations, etc.,
• Supported microfinance activities through credits for the mothers that had completed an education with us or were ready to undertake some kind of commercial activity,
• Offered the work and the expertise of AVANZAR‘s professionals: a project manager, a social worker and a psychologist.
• Acquired and coordinated the volunteer work of professionals such as nutritionists and doctors.
• Supported all mothers and children to receive an education by sponsoring the whole or part of the tuition and materials.
  

   

• Offered workshops in:

  • Self-esteem and personal development,
  • Human and Women‘s Rights,
  • first-aid methods and accident prevention,
  • sexual education, pregnancy and contraceptive methods,
  • government organizations and the support they offer to single mothers and their children,
  • improving working conditions.
    
    

• Offered psychological support through:

  • weekly group talks
  • personal treatments.

• Offered legal support by solving legal cases such as recognition of paternity, abuse, and pension cases,
• Mediated in order to reintegrate the women and their children into their families, when appropriate,
• Provided information on health, nutrition and sanitation in order to prevent illnesses and their recurrences,
• Enabled people to access all available social assistance and compensation (pensions for the children, bonuses for underprivileged people, etc),
• Contributed to the growth of internal projects such as a Pasta Fabric, an Atelier and a second -hand shop, which gives the mothers the opportunity to learn, work and earn money and gives the home an income,
• Built a new kitchen: new flooring and ceiling, glass-windows, doors, sink, replacement of water pipes, new electrical wiring, new gas pipe, etc.,
• Built a day playroom for the children and furnished it with tables, chairs, beds, rugs, TV, toys, etc.,
• Donated a washing machine,
• Completed a renovation and maintenance of sanitary installations such as the bathroom, showers etc.,
• Shipped fabrics for curtains and bed sheets (donated by Maison Interior from Zürich),
• Made regular donations for food and medicines,
• Made donations of clothing, beds, bed sheets, mattresses, pillows, etc.,
• Made a donation of kitchen aids,
• Created a lavatory next to the kitchen where children and mothers wash themselves before and after meals,
• Constructed and installed a new metal front door for the house,
• Celebrated festivals and included economical support for quarterly leisure activities.

Desde el inicio del proyecto y hasta estos días hemos

• Ofrecido formación y seminarios en oficios como: cocina, costura, fontanería, manualidades, pequeñas instalaciones eléctricas, etc,
• Se apoyó actividades de microfinanciación a través de créditos para las madres que habían completado una educación con nosotros o estaban preparadas para emprender algún tipo de actividad comercial,
• Se ofreció el trabajo y la experiencia de los profesionales de AVANZAR: un gestor de proyectos, un trabajador social y un psicólogo.
• Se adquirió y coordinó el trabajo voluntario de profesionales como nutricionistas y médicos.
• Apoyó a todas las madres y niños para que recibieran una educación, patrocinando la totalidad o parte de la matrícula y los materiales.
  
  
• Se ofreció talleres de:
• • Autoestima y desarrollo personal,
  • derechos humanos y de la mujer,
  • métodos de primeros auxilios y prevención de accidentes,
  • educación sexual, embarazo y métodos anticonceptivos,
  • organizaciones gubernamentales y el apoyo que ofrecen a las madres solteras y a sus hijos,
  • mejora de las condiciones de trabajo.

• Se ofrece apoyo psicológico a través de
• • charlas semanales en grupo
  • tratamientos personales.
    
    
• Se ofreció apoyo jurídico resolviendo casos legales como reconocimiento de paternidad, malos tratos y casos de pensiones,
• Mediaba para reintegrar a las mujeres y a sus hijos en sus familias, cuando procedía,
• Proporcionó información sobre salud, nutrición y saneamiento para prevenir enfermedades y sus recidivas,
• Permitió a las personas acceder a todas las ayudas sociales y compensaciones disponibles (pensiones para los niños, bonificaciones para las personas desfavorecidas, etc.),
• Contribuido al crecimiento de proyectos internos como una fábrica de pasta, un atelier y una tienda de segunda mano, que da a las madres la oportunidad de aprender, trabajar y ganar dinero y proporciona al hogar unos ingresos,
• Construcción de una nueva cocina: nuevo suelo y techo, ventanas de cristal, puertas, fregadero, sustitución de las tuberías de agua, nuevo cableado eléctrico, nueva tubería de gas, etc,
• Construido una sala de juegos de día para los niños y amueblado con mesas, sillas, camas, alfombras, TV, juguetes, etc.,
• Donado una lavadora,
• Completado una renovación y mantenimiento de instalaciones sanitarias como el cuarto de baño, duchas, etc.,
• Envió telas para cortinas y sábanas (donadas por Maison Interior de Zurich),
• Donaciones regulares de alimentos y medicinas,
• Donaciones de ropa, camas, sábanas, colchones, almohadas, etc,
• Donación de utensilios de cocina,
• Creación de un lavabo junto a la cocina donde los niños y las madres se lavan antes y después de las comidas,
• Construido e instalado una nueva puerta metálica para la casa,
• Celebrado festivales e incluido apoyo económico para actividades de ocio trimestrales.
